Penuel ashram is a Psycho Social Rehabilitation centre run by Penuel – Emmanuel Charitable Trust under the patronage of Diocese of Kanjirappally. Penuel Ashram is a home for mentally sick destitute and Ashram provides shelter, food, clothing, medical aid, entertainment, and counselling and rehabilitation services. It is a centre that offers love and care to the mentally ill who are abandoned in the streets.
The enchanted vision, experiences and leaning of Fr. Sebastian Vechookarottu lead the way for the commencement of this Institution at Thampalakadu. Fr. Sebastian observed that many people with Psychiatric
problems were abandoned on the streets. He brought them to a temporary shelter which functioned in rented premises and cared for them. The humble beginning of Penuel Ashram was in 1997 which came into existence in response to a crying need. By the end of 1998, the number of inmates increased and a permanent building was acquired.
At present, the ashram is a care home for Psychiatric patients and also works as a de-addiction centre for alcoholics and substance abusers. Psychiatric patients are often abandoned by their families and are rejected by the society because of their violent behavioural patterns. So they are placed under our care. Hundreds of patients from Kerala and other parts of the country were given proper rehabilitation and treatment during the last 27 years. Many have recovered and have been restored to their families. Now we have an installed capacity for only 125 people
